Wine in Ancient Armenia

Since ancient times wine has been an integral part of Armenian culture, it was used in various rituals, in medicine, and in everyday life. In the Armenian nation, the connection with wine and winemaking has been outlined even in national epics and legends. Let's remember the famous saying of the “Daredavils of Sassoun” epic: "By bread, wine, and the Living Lord!". Apart from epics and traditions, we also find mentions of Armenian wine in the testimonies of ancient historians.

Historical References

According to the testimony of Herodotus, Armenia had trade relations with Babylon and, apart from other goods, also sold wine to them. In his famous "Anabasis" work, Xenophon mentions that when the Greek troops passed through Armenian lands, they were greeted with wine and beer and with famous Armenian hospitality. Wines were stored in deep underground warehouses in clay vats.

Archaeological Excavations

In 2011, during the excavations in Areni cave, a winemaking complex was found, proving the reliability of historical references. The discovered winemaking complex, which dates back to the 4th millennium B.C., is the oldest one in the world.

Currently Armenian wines have their special position among the world of wine industry. It is obvious, taking into consideration the widespread wine-making culture existing in Armenia.
